Professional Writing Creative Blog Post

As the communications manager for the Society of Professional Writers student organization, I managed and edited the program's blog. The blog exists to promote a positive, accurate image of the program to prospective students, helping them decide if it's a good fit for them. Each month, I determined a message I wanted to convey, asked a student to write a post, and then edited the post to ensure it effectively communicated that message.

purpose

To convey how creativity is an integral part of the program.

context

High school students who are considering the Professional Writing and Information Design Program.

Most high school students assume that the program only teaches students how to write technical manuals.

GlobalAccess Documentation

During my technical writing internship at Compassion International, I edited this GlobalAccess documentation. GlobalAccess is a site that provides information to Compassion employees and volunteers who live in the organization's 25 field countries. I received the document on the left and worked to remove unnecessary information, condense repetitive instructions, and make the writing clear for this audience that speaks English as a second language. After editing it once, I user tested the instructions with interns who spoke English as their second language. Using their comments, I made a final version of the document.

purpose

Teach global employees how to use the GlobalAccess program.

context

Compassion International employees in 25 countries.

The audience speaks English as a second language, so the information needed to be written in simple language.

Compassion International Internship Overview Blog Post

I edited this blog post from Compassion International for a project in my capstone course at Cedarville University. For this project, I was required to choose an organization and act as if I was completing an entire professional project for them. I chose to write and edit several blog posts as if they were for Compassion International's blog.

purpose

Give an overall view of the internship and explain how Compassion's mantra “where career and calling collide" applies to it.

context

College students who are considering the Compassion International internship program.

This was intended to promote the internship on Compassion's blog during open applications.
